Troop 49 Committee Meeting Notes
June 9, 2010

NEW ADULT REQUIREMENT effective June 1:  Any adult that participates in scouting events and meetings must have current Youth Protection.  Do so at www.myscouting.org.

Attendance:  Mrs. Maxwell, Mr. Alexander, Mrs. Nyfeler, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Moore, Mr. Morris, Mr. Henry, Mrs. Hoang.

Review Recent Activities:  Patrol cook-off went well.  Everyone ate what was cooked with 100% survivorship.

PLC Meetings:  Mr. Henry suggested that we structure PLC such that all 1st class and above scouts are expected to attend and participate in addition to those holding troop leadership positions?all other attending scouts would be welcome to attend and observe but should participate through their patrol leader.  The adult committee likes the idea.

Next PLC:  We will present this idea to the scouts:  How do you want to participate in Scout Jam in October and/or Webelos Woods in November.

Summer Camp:
--July 10-18, 2010, Peaceful Valley Ranch in Colorado.  Patrol Cooking
--June 13, 2010, 2-4 p.m. Adult Camp orientation meeting at the church.  Geared for one parent for each scout attending.  Scouts are welcome but it?s really for adults.  This will be a time for parents to ask important but squishy questions like "will my son be safe and what happens if he forgets something?" etc.
--We may have a guest scout attending camp with us who cannot attend his own troop's summer camp.  Parents, please review "Scouting as a safe place" rules.  Translation:  Be prepared to make him feel welcome, one and all.

June Activities:
--June 11-13, 2010 - Colorado Bend State Park campout.  SC:  Tai H; AC:  Mr. Alexander and Mrs. Hoang.  Meet at the church at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

--June 15, 6:30 p.m. - Swim checks at Northwest Pool.  All scouts and adults should come if you plan on getting near water with T49 in the next calendar year.  We should be finished by 7:30 p.m.  Free swim is the activity for the night after you finish your swim check.  All scouts, young and less young, going to summer camp need their swim checks done.  Scouts will probably want to stay and swim until 8:30 p.m. or whenever they close the pool.  If it rains, we'll have game night at the church.

--June 22 - Troop Meeting/Game night (or rescheduled swim checks if it rains).  Including board and card games in the upstairs room and soccer in the gym, if available.  Both types of activities will be available.

--June 29 - Troop Meeting/Cooking School.  Patrol leaders come at 6:30.  Everyone else 7-8:30 p.m. Taught by SPL and ASPL, with at least 5 "hands-on" stations for class members.  This will be dinner for the Scouts so come hungry.  (Adults, eat beforehand).  Grub fixings will be provided to each 3 person team for their class.  We'll need to borrow stoves, tables and cooking gear from parents to have enough classroom space.  SPL & ASPL will apply extra emphasis on the fact that scouts will be cooking all meals at summer camp.

July Activities:
--July 6, 7-8:30 p.m. ? Troop Meeting/Pocket knife activity/Totin' Chip training/knife safety.  Getting all scouts to their Totin' Chip as well as knife safety review for scouts who already have it before we go to Colorado.  SPL, ASPL, and extra troop adults to plan and lead this activity.  Unless you've just earned your Totin? Chip, all scouts will go through the Totin' Chip activities.  Safety first, etc.

--July 13 - We'll be in Colorado.  No local meeting.

--July 20 - Troop Meeting/Thorns and roses meeting about Colorado adventure.  Every scout will have a minute or two (on a clock) and we'll follow with the PLC that would have been on July 13. (Thorns and Roses is where everyone has a chance to say what they liked & didn't like about an event).

--July 27 - Troop Meeting/Event planned during the PLC on July 20.

--Scouting for Food - The scouts will need to make the decision on whether or not T49 participates this year.  Mrs. Maxwell will talk to the SPL before asking for an adult coordinator.  Last year the scouts decided to set up a table at the Woodrow IGA/Minimax, which brought in a nice haul.  Look for the emails.

--[NOTE DATE CHANGE] July 28, 6-8 p.m. Adult meeting where we create the agenda for the August 7 Annual Planning Meeting.

August Activities
--August 7, 8 a.m. to noon - Annual Planning Meeting.  This is the meeting where the 2010-2011 activities are planned.  All scouts and parents are highly, highly, highly encouraged to attend.  Help plan a fun year.  Adults, talk with your scout so he is prepared to bring up his ideas for activities, fundraisers, service projects, etc.

--August 17 Court of Honor.  Pot luck is the tradition.

Advancements
Mrs. Moore would like to make sure we set up some more Scout-specific meetings mixed in with the fun ones.  Mr. Morris responded that some of our cooking activities norm with rank advancement requirements.  On a related note, if adults want something on the PLC agenda, email the SPL before Sunday at 5 p.m.  Or you are invited to the PLC to bring up what needs discussing.  Mrs. Smith said she'd like more proactive adult participation in leading merit badges so watch for her emails.  Mrs. Moore will give Mrs. Smith the name of an adult who can teach the First Aid Merit badge in the fall.

Equipment
Mr. Alexander will be checking with Mr. Swenson about our getting Troop 410's old chuck boxes.

Membership and Recruiting
Quartermaster:  Van H; Adult Equipment Leader:  The Mr. Morris who is not the Scoutmaster.  Our storage shed needs new shelving.  Mrs. Maxwell will be in touch.

Training
New adult requirement.  Effective June 1:  Any adult that participates in scouting events and meetings must have current Youth Protection.  Go to www.myscouting.org.  So important, I said it twice.

Treasurer's Report
As of today's meeting..
Checking:  $3189.80
Savings:  $354.33
Deposits:  Made
Billing:  Not yet gone out for camp, although many folks have paid already
Note:  It may look like we have a large balance but this amount is necessary for us to pay for things easily and be reimbursed by families, rather than have to wait until folks pay.  This amount is the normal balance.
